GMO shouldn’t be banned

GMO(Genetically Modified Organism) product is a product made by organisms whose genes has been modified artificially. People often question the safety of GMO, and argues that it should be banned. However, GMO products are actually proved to be not harmful, and has a lot of benefits compared to non- GMO products. So ultimately, GMO shouldn’t be banned. The main reason people assert to ban GMO is because its safety has not been sufficiently verified. Yet, the safety of GMO has already been proved several times. A representative example of the use of GMO products is to treat diabetes by injecting insulin extracted 　　from pigs into the blood. This treatment was developed about 75 years ago and is still widely used. Even though insulin 　　from GMO pigs is directly exposed to human blood, there have been no cases of health problems caused by it. Like this, there have been no threats to health for the past few decades using GMO. Many researches also support the fact that GMO products are safe to use. The National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine issued that they found no factors affecting health negatively in GMOs after examining them through hundreds of experiments and live testimony. Plus, there is no evidence that non-GMO products offer any nutritional or safety advantages over GMO products. Therefore, it is inappropriate to ban GMO products 　　from the market only because it may not be safe. GMO products can be a way to solve international problems. For instance, it is possible to 　　create crops that grow faster and are immune to several diseases by applying GMO technology. This enables people to produce more food, and food deficiency problems caused by population growth can be solved. Moreover, modifying the nutritional contents of food not only makes GMOs healthier than original products, but also provides health to people who have difficulty intaking enough nutrients. By developing GMO, it will be able to give medication to patients with food instead of pills, expanding the spread of medical technology. If GMO is prohibited, there will be negative effects to both the environment and economy. Eliminating all GMOs will lead to a siginificant decrease in production of food. To make up for this loss, more land must be converted into agricultural fields. This causes increase of greenhouse gas emissions and loss of green areas like forests. Pesticide uses will also increase due to the absence of pest-resisiat GMOs. 　　From an economic point of view, if food production is reduced due to the ban on GMOs, profits in the agricultural sector also decrease. Also, prohibiting GMOs would result in the loss of many jobs in the genetic manipulation field, causing higher unemployment. In conclusion, GMO products shouldn’t be banned, since it is proved to be safe in many ways. Moreover, GMO is a solution to several global problems like food deficiency and lack of nutritients. Prohibiting GMO products also causes additional issues in the environment and economy. Therefore, GMO products should rather be used in more aspects than being banned in markets.
